Whether caused by lack of sleep, stress, or genetics, eye bags can make you feel tired and older.

For years we have all heard Beauty influencers recommend concealers 2 shades lighter than your foundation shade,... yet among the professional makeup artist community we have been shaking our heads. This is completely wrong.

So let me set the record straight,... your concealer should be orange.

WHAT ARE UNDER EYE BAGS?

The dark pigmentation or puffiness underneath our eyes, near our nose are often called under eye bags.

The biggest contributor to the size and appearance of under eye bags is structure of your face which can't really be changed without major surgery.

People of European heritage will have more obvious under eye bag appearance than people of Asian heritage.

Also, as we age we loose fat in our face and this can cause this area directly under our eyes to become hollow looking.

Further intensifying the appearance of the under eye bags.

Many people associate this under eye area with lack of sleep, sign of illness and aging.

It's important to note:

Under eye bags are a completely normal part of a person's face and everyone has some degree of this appearance at any age or health.

WHAT CAUSES EYE BAGS?

Good news!

There are things we can do to lessen the appearance of under eye bags!

Common factors that are easily altered can improve the appearance of this area like:

  1. Addressing any low iron levels with a doctor.

Low levels of iron can cause more blue/purple appearance under the eyes because the under eye area isn't getting enough oxygen from the blood cells due to the low iron.

It's essential any treatment and diagnosis of this is done through a doctor (I'm a makeup artist, not a doctor).

  2. Lack of sleep

Insufficient rest leads to puffiness and dark circles.

This can be improved by scheduling an earlier bed time or even getting a power nap or two in each day.

  3. Dehydration

Like most of our skin woes, dehydration is the cause.

Those puffy eyes might be from not drinking enough water, so swap that next coffee for a glass of water!

  4. Poor Lymphatic drainage and sinus issues (again check with a doctor)

In this area of the face there are several lymph nodes which can become swollen and cause puffiness.

Also, in this area are the sinuses which can become inflamed and swollen causing this area to become puffy.

Unfortunately, I know about these problems first hand and can attest to the huge difference treating these can make to the appearance of the face.

HOW TO CONCEAL EYE BAGS WITH MAKEUP THE RIGHT WAY?

For years makeup artists have been watching as our clients draw bright triangles underneath their eyes and be disappointed their under eye bags haven't disappeared.

So let me clear up all the confusion!

Youtuber's often show these techniques under bright heavy studio lighting on videos with editing and photoshopping.

That's why it looks like it works.

In real life, when the cameras are turned off and they step out in to the day light, the results are very cakey looking makeup which highlights rather than hides the under eye circles.

To conceal like a pro these are the steps!

#1 - Choose the Right Concealer

Contrary to what the youtube influencers will have you believe, concealer shouldn't be 2 shades lighter than your face.

If you spend some time in the sunlight or really strong light looking underneath your eyes where we have our under eye circles or darkness you will notice the colours in this area are actually blue/purple.

Concealer should actually be a peach or orange tone because the colours causing the under eye bags are blue/ purple.

If you don't know much about colour theory, don't worry, all you need to know is peach cancels out blue/purple colours under the eyes.

This will actually get rid of your under eye bags.

Our Beginner-Friendly Cream Concealer for Under-Eye Dark Circles is specifically designed to neutralise discolouration while providing a lightweight, natural finish.

#2 - Apply in Thin Layers

Less is more when it comes to concealer.

Forget the triangle method! That is way too much concealer and in all the wrong areas.

Apply a very small amount directly along the lash line under your eyes.

Be careful to only apply this concealer to the areas you can see blue/purple like the image below.

Blend gently with a brush for a seamless look.

Apply light layers until the under eye circles are covered.

#3 - Set with Powder

To prevent creasing, lightly dust translucent powder over the concealer.

This locks in the product, keeping your under-eye area smooth and bright all day.

For most people, peach or orange-toned concealers work best to counteract blue or purple tones.

Q3: Can I permanently get rid of eye bags?

Depending on the cause, you can reduce eye bags significantly with lifestyle changes or concealer.
